Abstract It is in 1749 that the first descriptions of plants were made in Senegal by a French naturalist, Michel Adanson. They were pursued through various explorations (Du Vallier) and studies that have allowed by the end of the Seventies to know the whole of the vegetation formations in the country.

Thereafter, with the occurrence of droughts and the problems related to the management of these natural resources, the setting up of monitoring sites for a better understanding the dynamics of the vegetation, has been necessary. Various approaches (ground, air and satellite) have been used according to the objectives and the scales.

Important results were obtained in the development of methodologies for monitoring and evaluation of the evolutionary tendencies of the vegetation. However, it is worth to note that these investigations were supported in the majority of the cases by programs funded through external bi or multilateral partners. With the withdrawal of the latter, the majority of these activities has faced disturbances or has stopped.
