The Zaï-System is a West African traditional rehabilitation system for semiarid degraded lands. The seeds are placed into holes together with organic material (dung, compost, house wastes, leaves and twigs). Foraging termites are attracted to this organic material and beside the decomposing effect, their burrowing activity on the way to the food source increases the porosity of the soil, thereby enhancing the aeration and water infiltration capacity. |
