Weather data
A large number of automatic weather stations has been implemented in the frame of the BIOTA AFRICA project by the Namibian National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) and the Group "Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology" (BEE) of the University of Hamburg. The website offers hourly updates of data and graphs of a large number of weather parameters.

WP4: Ex-situ conservation of forest plants in Maseno Botanical Garden

Project leader(s)

Prof. Dr. Eberhard Fischer
Prof. Dr. John Onyango

Project description

Kenya has a high diversity of vascular plants (ca. 6800 species), of which approximately 1200 taxa are considered as rare or threatened. For nature conservation - in particular ex-situ conservation - Botanical Gardens play an important role. A cooperation with the Botanical Garden and Research Center on Biodiversity at Maseno University was established during phase II. The main aim, developing an ex-situ conservation of rare and endangered plants of Kenya - at least 50% of the guineo-congolian Kakamega montane rainforest - will continue. Also a didactical concept for presentation of biodiversity should be realized. Furthermore Botanic Gardens have an important role to play in building capacity for plant conservation by providing training for garden staff and for local, national and international participants, and so it is a fundamental part of the capacity building and the exit strategy.
