Support for national reporting capacities for CBD

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has established a “Clearing-House Mechanism” to ensure that all governments have access to the information and technologies they need for meeting the CBD’s demands. This mechanism was implemented to improve the management of information and technologies relevant for preservation of biodiversity. It seeks to promote and facilitate technical and scientific co-operation within and between countries to bridge the large differences in knowledge and application between different countries, to develop a global mechanism for exchanging and integrating information on biodiversity and to establish cross-cutting networks in particular the network of National Focal Points (NFP) to address matters related to technical and scientific co-operation.

BIOTA-West will closely collaborate with the NFPs and will give extensive support by providing comprehensive biodiversity data. Main aims are the provision of biodiversity maps, results from Gap Analyses on the status of Protected Areas and other data, which are fundamental for the report of the NFPs to the CBD secretary. With this collaboration, the internet presentation of the NFPs shall be strengthened and improved. Moreover, through the collaboration with the NFPs in the three countries, synergies and linkages among them shall be strengthened. As Germany will house the next Conference of the Parties (COP 9) in 2008 there is a strong interest from all partners for joint efforts to collaborate on a vastly improved exchange of information on the sustainable use of biodiversity.
